Our Vision and Values

The Outwood Institute of Education (OIE) offers a School Direct programme that strives to develop, support and celebrate excellent trainee teachers who are well-prepared for the profession and who are driven by our ambition that “the whole point of schools is that children come first and everything we do must reflect this single goal”.

We are an integral part of a large, successful multi-academy trust, Outwood Grange Academies Trust (OGAT), who have thirty-one academies in the north of England.  We embrace the opportunity to ensure that all children, irrespective of their starting point, receive an excellent education and we relish the opportunity to be part of the much needed regeneration of the areas we work in.

To achieve this aim, staff within OGAT have three values in common. They:

  • put ‘students first’ – they care deeply about children;

  • strive to be experts in their respective fields; and

  • are obsessive about attaining the highest standards.

OGAT want to be known for placing:

Students first: raising standards and transforming lives
— Martyn Oliver, CEO, Outwood Grange Academies Trust

The Outwood Institute of Education supports the work of the trust through providing high quality professional development for staff from initial teacher training through to CEO training. We are a collaborative of 6 teaching schools, with Outwood Grange Academy, Wakefield being one of the first designated nationally.

Our teaching schools work in partnership with three higher education institutions to deliver school-led initial teacher training across the north of England:

  • Durham University

  • Leeds Beckett University

  • Sheffield Hallam University

The OIE also supports a network of schools beyond the trust; we are part of a large alliance of over 80 schools and our ITT students benefit from these wider relationships to ensure a rich and varied experience during their training year.

We share the same vision and values as the trust; it is our job to ensure teachers have the skills and knowledge to deliver these.  We believe that initial teacher education is the key to improving standards in education and raising life chances of young people in the north of England. Teachers have the power to change lives and regenerate communities; our programme allows future teachers to work alongside innovative, ambitious and student-focused teachers who are passionate about raising standards and transforming lives.
